Electronic Arts just released this big gallery of Need for Speed Carbon images. It doesn't look bad, but let's just hope they fixed the framerate since the demo has been released.

2006-10-04 13:15:52 NFS Carbon Demo is quite dissapointing

hi Guys,

the hefty 1Gig NFS Carbon Demo is on the marketplace and I already did some test drives.

Well, I don't feel the heat. As will all rushed EA Games, I 'm gonna make a big circle around that one, though I was interested in Carbon until today.

The framerate is never above 30 (more like 15 or 20) and the handling feels like driving on eggs. It's stuttering as usual and never gets really smooth - it's the same all over again. Due to past experiences I guess this won't change in the final build.

Way to blow it EA. Again. And again. And again . . ... etc.

NFS games suck anyway. Burnout is the way to go.

Ok I downloaded it, and everything was fine until the gameplay started. The customization is great, althought I hope there's more to it than that shown in the demo, if not that's a shame.

Like doxLEXfisti said, the framerate is horrible and incosistent. The regular street race was a pain to play, the slideshow is horrible, yes, even as a slideshow is horrible. The graphics are plain. The car models are meh, the reflections suck ass, and the very little detail there is gets blurred to hell in a way I haven't seen before, the blur is just way too excessive! All this at an average framerate ~20fps

Then I go into drifiting mode and surprise!!! The framerate raises to an average of ~25fps.....not good either. But that's not the main problem in this race, it's the "drifting". Maybe it's because of the awesome drifting in Forza, no actually, the drifting in Carbon is just nasty. To start, the mode in NFSU was not good at all either, but I was expecting an improvement and it turns out it's even more pathetic. Weird how you can drift without ever using the brakes. It just feels horribly fake and arcadey, and that's not the problem because they still could have done it very well and not lose the arcade feel. I call it stupid.

And lastly is the special event where you have to follow a car, which is the best the demo has to offer. The framerate is as bad here, but what makes it the best even in the demo is the track, which is a very nice track, more in the style of the NFS Hot Persuit games, or more in the style of the best NFS game ever, NFS High Stakes.

So really, to me this game is a big pile of unnaceptable crap :D

they could do way waaaay better than this. I had a little fun, but that soon turned to boredom. Although im not a big EA racer fan, so I was expecting much with this. Maybe they are putting everything into nfsu3 or something, who knows. Untill then I guess import tuner and TDU will have to hold me over till forza 2 hits.

im a big fan of nfs games, and even bigger fan when they went underground. i loved most wanted. i had great expectations for NFS Carbon but it seems that EA is out to disappoint with this instalment.. cool concept but bad framerates, handling, graphics.. it almost feels like a drop in quality from MW.. wait, thats wrong.. it IS a drop from MW..

Well..being that Most Wanted was one of the better NFS games in recent times--I thought it was possible. But this is DEFINITLY a drop in quality from Most Wanted..the framerate is really something, why would you even release a game demo of a RACING game of all things with such a horrible framerate...ugh.

If the full game has the same HORRIBLE quality of the demo… What a pathetic excuse for a game…

Maybe EA will make “Smooth framerate” and “better handling” micro transactions available… :)

God almighty, I can't believe what a piece of crap they have come up with this time around, do these people still feel good about themselves after releasing such garbage like this!?

I actually went back and had a go with the NFSMW demo I still have on my HD, and believe it or not, MW handles much better and even looks better, unbelievable!
Also, I don't know who had the brilliant idea to use the 'Burnout' type car reflections, but he's not in his right mind anyway, god, those reflections are ugly.
And the framerate is awfull, though sadly enough, it doesn't even surprise me anymore...

The demo is horrible. The sulpting stuff was nice, but it just turned to crap when you actually start racing, especially the "drifting", if you can even call it drifting. Its sad that it has fallen so far, it used to be my favorite racing game series, but it seems to have gone downhill with Underground. Seems it was at its best with NFS: Hot Pursuit 2. They need to throw out everything they have done to NFS and just restart from its roots(exotics on exotic tracks, being chased by police), bring back the game that people actually enjoyed.

I don't think EA cares.

Here I think I've summed it up pretty nicely:

The quality of the final product does not matter as much as the number of potential buyers in the market the title will appeal to. The percentage of casuals that will buy something sight unseen is high enough to cover the costs of development plus a good amount of change. We don't care if they return to buy the game again next year as there are simply too many gamers out there to fuck over; they will probably try our product again in a few years anyhow (or we will simply buy up key developers and/or lock up key licenses so they have no alternative). Maximum profits for minimum effort.
