Looks good considering its supposed to be targeted for 1080p.
But it could have looked much better at 720p.

games like God of War, Prince of Persia Sands of time (not WW or The Two thrones) and Final Fantasy are perfect examples of outstading art direction.

I dunno. The textures look a little off to me. But my only complaint was that it wasn't locked at 30fps. When they do that I'll be happy.

Anyway, like always, Lair looks like ass in screens. Still, it's probably one of the most impressive games, if not the most, from a technical level. If they can just look in the framerate, then they're set. Gota love Factor 5

I agree with alimo that the art direction is a bit assy, just like Gears, but much like Gears the actual appeal of the visuals could come from somewhere else.
I won't say that they'll ultimately have similar things going for them but I think Lair has a shot at feeling truly grand and epic. Not only thanks to its subject matter but also because it's frankly a bit more believable this way.
Of course it all falls flat if the game itself is boring, and I've rarely had this bad a sense of whether the game is good or bad before. :O

Still, I've been a big fan of Factor 5's past games, well the Star Wars ones on the Nintendo platforms. I'm trying to believe

Some screens look amazing some look like crap...that's why I for one need to see this in motion to judge. Personally I think this game could become one of the best or on of the best complete faillures.

Neither Lair or MGS4 have been released. Who knows how much of eithers' levels we have seen. Gears of War is a valid example of a consistent palette and I would have enjoyed seeing diverse environments. Doesn't make Epic Games any less of developer or Gears of War any less of a great game.

Well, I feel that MGS have always used limited colour palettes but it's had no trouble keeping the settings diverse, nor has it picked "dull" colours that you don't *react* to, nor has it used gritty, textured surfaces to just "mess" details away to gray or brown paste.
Gears and Lair look a lot alike in that sense, while MGS4 still uses a clean, distinct style for different surfaces* and an emphasis on tones of colour. I think it's a fair comparison to use some of the levels from GRAW as examples. Some levels in GRAW had sunsets or sunrises to give a consistent yellow tint or glow to everything, resulting in a way more appealing picture than the gray/brown-ness of the aforementioned games.
But I guess future architecture IS gray and brown. Quake 2 had the look down already.
* Actually Resistance made me take note of this, and Call of Duty also employs a similarly clean style to great effect that redeems their grayness. Their ability to not clutter the picture with excess detail means that different locales can look more distinctly different instead of just blending together in their "messyness".

IMO from what i have seen mgs4 looks dull as hell in the color pallet dept, but for me mgs has always been about the story and thats what i'm looking forward to.

Well I suppose if you don't like the glowy yellow tint of it then you're pretty much in for hell. Personally, tones of actual COLOUR I usually have no problem with. It's when it's basically grayscale I lose interest.

Truth is though, some games keep visually interesting even with matte, sometimes almost monochrome locales by varying greatly from level to level.

Killzone was quite an amazing looking game for the PS2, considering that, the PS3 Killzone will certainly be a visual feast IMO.

@ jedimaster
Indeed, and it's like.. Fix the AI and the controls and make it HD and it's great already. That's why I'm looking forward to the sequel so much, they can't possibly disappoint. Not me at least, because I'm not expecting it to look like the trailer did, nor am I ruling out the possibility - I'll be happy with it either way.
I do think they got unexpected competition from what's essentially a first party FPS though, in Resistance. I mean that game won't win awards, but it's big, it's crammed with multiplayer features and it's already played by virtually everyone with a PS3. Killzone might have a tougher than expected time to become the number one flagship FPS on the console, but not because of any "outside" threat, but by a stable-mate! :O

I think with MGS is that even though the colours are dull the charcter models have a flat shaded look (more simplistic textures), stuff like Lair and GoW try to hard with textures and then everything looks too busy.
Sometimes less is more.
